Unremarkable things

This is the kitchen table in the home I grew up in. It may look like an ordinary table, but for me it was far from ordinary.

It’s said that there is no greater bond than that of a family and that special bond often starts at the dinner table. Growing up, the kitchen table in my childhood home served as a place of connection, joy and comfort. It was where I watched in awe as my dad would lay out newspapers, carefully overlapping them before adding an array of spices that created the most delicious meals, meals that provided our family with lasting memories.
In my minds eye it always appeared bigger and grander and every time I return to my childhood home I am humbled by the old rickety table that served us so well.
Extendable sides would accomodate the growing family and watching my own children share food with their beloved grandad from the same table always brought a smile of nostalgia to my face
It didn’t matter whether I was child, a teenager or a grown adult with my own family, dad would always beckon me over and make space on his plate for me to share food with him, always with a smile and the words that always brought me comfort…’You Like, You Eat’
This simple kitchen table will forever be held close to my heart. Not just for the delicious food it enabled my dad to cook but for the sense of love, joy and family that radiated from it. Magic really does lie in the most unremarkable of things ❤
